As BarCampMediaCityUK takes place this weekend, opportunities have arisen for Manchester students to get involved in another upcoming event – TEDx Salford at MediaCity.

TED is a global foundation which started in 1984 by bringing experts from the technology, design and entertainment sectors together to provide intellectually challenging conferences and lectures.
The foundation has inspired local independent events, called TEDx, where similar ideas of inspiration are discussed in self-organized events. TEDx is in it’s third year and has 800 conferences per year in various locations, and “…inspires innovation, thought leadership and visionary insight”.

Science, arts, politics, global issues, architecture, music, and entrepreneurship are amongst the topics discussed in today’s community-driven TED events, aimed at providing a “global movement focused on meaningful change through the power of ideas, inspiration and empowerment”.

Mishal Saeed is the organiser behind this upcoming, student-driven event in MediaCity. A long-time fan of TED, Saeed is currently an International Relations and Politics student, and Student Ambassador at the University of Salford.

The Egg, a state-of-the-art higher education centre at the hub of MediaCity, is the proposed venue for Saeed’s event. Irene Khan, the first woman and Asian to be President of Amnesty International and a world renowned human rights activist, lawyer and Chancellor of Salford has been confirmed as a guest speaker. More guest speakers to be confirmed.

Saeed is looking for volunteers with IT expertise to make and edit websites, and also to film and video edit the event. Any local students who are interested in getting involved in the project should email info[at]tedxsalford.com by 1st October.
